How to Take Proper Care Of Your Denture Implants

Denture implants are a set of fake teeth designed for individuals who have missing teeth. If you have denture implants, it’s important that you properly take care of them to avoid developing complications such as gum disease. Getting denture implants may seem like you’ll never have to make a trip to the dentist again, but that’s not true. Even with fake teeth, it’s still possible to have problems in your mouth. With that said, let’s go over some tips on how to properly take care of your implants.

Use a Soft Brush

Many people make the mistake of using a hard toothbrush to brush their teeth, but this is a mistake that should be avoided, especially with implants.

It’s best to use a toothbrush with soft bristles if you’re not already. Hard bristles will scratch the surface of your implant and damage them. Additionally, avoid using material such as metal products used to clean your teeth.

Avoid Using Abrasive Products

You’d be surprised at how many products can be abrasive to your implants. Something as simple as the type of toothpaste or mouthwash you use can compromise your dentures.

With that said, it’s best to use sensitive cleaning products. Individuals with implants should avoid oral products with intense flavors as they can irritate your mouth and gums.

Practice Daily Flossing

Unfortunately, many people do not floss enough, with some people not even flossing at all. But flossing is a critical step in your oral hygiene and is certainly necessary with implants.

Flossing will take the bad breath away. If flossing is put off, the little pieces of food stuck in your teeth will make your mouth stink, therefore making your breath stink. With this, flossing will decrease the chances of developing infections and issues in the mouth.

Individuals with implants have an increased chance of developing plaque. If you’re having difficulties flossing with implants, there are various flosses designed to help improve your oral health.

Avoid Sticky and Hard Foods

Avoiding sticky and hard foods is another essential way to care for your implants. These types of foods are damaging and can cause unnecessary complications. Hard foods can make your dentures unstable and become loose. Foods that require a hard chomp or a lot of chewing to swallow should be cut into small pieces and chewed on both sides of your mouth. Be sure to cut foods such as steak, apples, carrots, hard candies, or any food that takes a lot to crunch into bite-size pieces.

Visit the Dentist Regularly

While implants will improve your smile, it isn’t a freebie to stop going to the dentist. In general, it’s important to visit the dentist twice a year for a cleaning and examination. If you are suspecting any issues with your implants, you will need to go more often than usual.

Denture implants are a great way to fix certain dental issues and give you a more confident smile, but implants should be cared for just like natural teeth. If you have implants, be sure to use a soft-bristle toothbrush, avoid using abrasive products, floss daily, avoid sticky and hard foods, and visit the dentist regularly.
